Gender, Conflict and Peacebuilding Research at PRIO

The Gender, Conflict and Peacebuilding project was established in 2006 to fill a research and teaching gap in Norway on issues relating to Women, Peace and Security. In the years that have passed the project and its members have created positive synergies for gender research across PRIO programs and projects. PRIO has become a hub for research on gender, peace and conflict in Norway.

The project activities cluster around four main areas:

research and publishing;
teaching and training;
policy advice and public outreach; and
conferences, seminars and networking.

Our expertise on issues pertaining to sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict situations and global regimes and strategies for the implementation of gender sensitive peace and security policies are particularly sought after.

The disciplinary background of our researcher’s span from political science to history, anthropology and psychology. Our research methodology is a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods; reflecting PRIO’s inter-disciplinary approach to peace studies.

Research topics under this project include:

Sexualized violence in conflict and post-conflict situations

Who are the perpetrators?
How can impunity for sexualized violence be fought?
How can women be protected from sexualized violence?

The UN and implementation of UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security – strategies and action plans
Women’s participation in conflict resolution and peace building
Women’s security in fragile states
Gender perspectives on transnational crime
