Accomplishing gender equality has been a prioritized goal of the international community for many years, and yet, in many places, women still face injustice, exclusion, and violence. To track progress on women’s rights and female empowerment, quantitative and comparable global indices play a crucial role.
This policy brief introduces the third edition of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Index, created by researchers at the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) and the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). It measures women’s wellbeing along three dimensions – inclusion, justice, and security. The index provides a significant tool to understand key achievements, as well as a guide to map remaining efforts to achieve gender equitable societies.
