Riyuka Suzuki will visit PRIO from 5 to 30 October to learn more about PRIO’s research and our work related to gender and Women, Peace and Security.

Riyuka has been selected—through a highly competitive process—by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in their new program to nurture a younger generation in the field of gender equality.

Riyuka's research focuses on gender politics, Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, and civic engagement with national defence. She investigates how gender identities and ideologies shape individual political behaviour and participation, such as the propensity to fight and civic involvement in security, and what determines gender-inclusive political representation and parliamentary dynamics. In this, she combines perspectives from gender politics, comparative politics, and peace and security studies.

Riyuka has just completed an MSc by Research candidate in Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. Her MScR paper is titled ‘Roles of Gender Identity and Ideologies in Shaping Individual Propensity to Fight in Japan’. She also holds youth leadership roles within civil society and previously served as Youth Delegate of the Government of Japan to the UN Commission on the Status of Women. She serves as both UN Young Representative for Japan and Board Member of the Japanese national affiliate of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women.
