Women exposed to armed conflict, 1990–2024

Policy brief

Rustad, Siri Aas (2025) Women exposed to armed conflict, 1990–2024, GPS Policy Brief, 4. Oslo: PRIO.

2024 marked the highest number of state-based conflicts on record since 1946. It was also the fifth deadliest year since the end of the Cold War, with approximately 160,000 fatalities across all conflict types. While these figures reflect the scale of global violence, the consequences are not experienced uniformly. Men and women are affected in distinct ways, shaped by social roles, vulnerabilities and exposure to different forms of harm. This policy brief shows how and where women are impacted by conflict, highlighting regional disparities, patterns of violence and the gendered dimensions of insecurity.
